Gewiss-Ballan burst onto the professional peloton in the early 1990s as a formidable Italian squad backed by the Bergamo-based electrical components giant Gewiss and shoemaker Ballan. The team's striking blue and black livery, adorned with a world map motif, captured the ambition of a squad with truly global aspirations. Under the tactical genius of directeur sportif Michele Ferrari, Gewiss achieved one of cycling's most talked-about moments when Moreno Argentin, Giorgio Furlan, and Evgeni Berzin swept the podium at the 1994 Flèche Wallonne in a display of astonishing dominance. That same year, the young Russian sensation Berzin stunned the cycling world by winning the Giro d'Italia, outdueling the great Miguel Indurain across the Italian mountains.
