Gewiss-Ballan burst onto the professional peloton in the early 1990s as a formidable Italian squad, backed by the electrical components giant Gewiss and footwear manufacturer Ballan. The team's striking globe motif became one of the most recognizable kits in the bunch, a bold declaration of international ambition wrapped around the torsos of some seriously talented riders. Under the tactical genius of Michele Ferrari, the squad delivered stunning results, none more dramatic than their controversial one-two-three sweep at the 1994 Flèche Wallonne with Moreno Argentin, Evgeni Berzin, and Giorgio Furlan crossing the line in formation. Berzin would go on to dazzle at that year's Giro d'Italia, seizing the maglia rosa and holding off the great Miguel Indurain in the mountains.
