La Vie Claire burst onto the professional peloton in 1984 as the brainchild of French businessman Bernard Tapie, instantly turning heads with a kit designed after the geometric abstractions of Dutch artist Piet Mondrian. Bold blocks of primary red, blue, and yellow divided by stark black lines made it arguably the most iconic and recognizable jersey in cycling history. It was Bernard Hinault and Greg LeMond who wore these colours to glory, delivering dramatic one-two finishes at the Tour de France in 1985 and a legendary, tension-filled battle for supremacy in 1986. The long sleeve version evokes those cool spring mornings in the Alps and Pyrenees, where team riders pushed through mist and rain draped in what amounted to wearable modern art. Few jerseys have so perfectly married fine art with athletic ambition, and its visual impact remains as striking today as it was four decades ago.
