Gino Bartali remains one of cycling's most towering figures — a man whose courage on the bike was matched only by his bravery off it, secretly saving hundreds of lives during World War II. His partnership with the Ursus bicycle manufacturer produced some of the most memorable racing campaigns of the late 1940s and early 1950s, a period crowned by Bartali's legendary 1948 Tour de France victory at the age of 34.
